.Treasure Island Resort has been running successful breeding programs for rare and endangered species and also the preservation of the marine ecosystem around the island.
The resort’ is a protected marine reserve and some of the species now being reintroduced include giant clams, triton snails and coral gardens. Being located within a protected marine reserve has seen the increase in number of marine species and also the reintroduction of giant slams and triton snails. You can swim among more than 20 species of reef fish including the colourful parrot-fish, angel-fish and coral trout. Take part in escorted snorkelling tours to “coral tables” where you can “plant” new coral.
In January of every year, guests of Treasure Island have the opportunity to tag and release endangered Hawksbill turtles. The turtles have been fed and monitored from the moment they hatch until they have enough strength to be released back into the ocean.
A popular Kids’ Club activity is to feed Hibiscus flowers to the rare Crested Iguanas which have been successfully nesting and breeding on Treasure Island.
The endangered flightless Banded Rail was introduced on the island in the late 90’s and has since grown in numbers. Although normally very shy the birds have become very cheeky and it’s not uncommon for them to hop right into your bure or take a splash in your foot bath outside.
