Shopping in Fiji

In the handicraft and souvenir shops you will find typically Fijian handicrafts like baskets and mats woven in grass, masi or tapa cloth, wood carvings bearing animal motifs, pottery items and much more. You will also find objects d’art like cannibal forks and replicas of Fijian war clubs. If you are looking for gifts for friends and family, then pick up some t shirts with typically Fijian designs, or some tanoa bowls with exquisite carvings. If you want to carry back a real slice of Fiji, then pick up a sulu. A sulu is a wrap-around skirt like a sarong. It is the national dress of Fiji, worn by men to work, as a day skirt, and by women as an evening dress.

Almost every Fijian town has its own market selling fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood. There are also shops selling jewellery, silks and cottons, patronised mainly by the locals. Stroll down these vibrant markets and pick up things you may not find back at home.

Shops in Fiji are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. but are closed on Sundays. Shops in hotels and resorts keep longer hours and are open through the week. Major credit cards are accepted by most shops.
