Food & Cuisine in Fiji
Many hotels and resorts offer theme nights, and pool side and beach side barbeques. But what you should not miss is the traditional Fiji fare served by them to the beat of the meke, which is the traditional dance of Fiji.
Lovo is the most distinctive dish in Fijian cuisine. Lovo actually means an underground earthen oven. The magiti (feast) featuring lovo is held outdoors, where an underground oven is filled with heated rocks. Meats and vegetables of various kinds are wrapped in banana leaves, placed inside the lovo, and covered with earth. The leaf packets are removed after several hours, to bring to you succulent meats and vegetables with a delectable smoky flavour. On very special occasions, a whole suckling pig finds its way into the lovo!
The aficionado can delve further and savour other Fijian specialities like kokoda and palusami. Both these are cooked with lolo, which is coconut milk made from sweet tender coconut. Lolo is indispensable to Fiji cuisine. Kokoda is fresh sea food marinated in lime juice and served with lolo, while palusami is taro leaves stuffed with meat and vegetables and cooked in lolo.
For a complete Fijian experience, sink your teeth into the lovo and top it up with a meke!
